Baking with Bella - Gingerbread House!

My friend's daughter, Bella, came over today to decorate a gingerbread house with me, and we had such a good time!

I cheated a little and bought a pre-fab gingerbread house from the grocery store, to save time.  Here's the recipe for the icing - it dries hard, and really holds onto all those candies.  I found it here.  This is how you make it:

Ingredients:

3 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar
4 and 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions:

Beat the egg whites and the cream of tartar with an electric mixer at medium speed.  [I used the whisk attachment, but I'm told that the paddle attachment works too.]

Add the powdered sugar little by litter, turning the mixer to high after each addition.

When all the powdered sugar is incorporated, turn the mixer on high for three to four minutes.  The icing should be very thick and glossy.

You can refrigerate the icing if you want, but make sure to mix it well when you take it out.

Decorating!

To prepare for Bella's arrival, I put my candies into little bowls on a tray - that way, if they were to spill, they're contained.  I also put the gingerbread house on a tray for the same reason.

I let Bella decorate it however she wanted, with only a few additions from me.

Here are some close up shots:

When we were done, we were covered with icing and hyped up from eating so many candies - it was so much fun!
